Erosion, & Types of Weathering Chapter 10 Erosion A process where water, wind, or gravity transports soil (sediment) from its source The process by which rocks are broken down into smaller pieces There are 2 main types, chemical & Physical Weathering Mechanical Weathering The break down of rock into smaller pieces due to physical means Frost wedging (water freezing in rock cracks) Abrasion
erosion and uplift may have strong effects on timing of gen-eration, charging and preservation of hydrocarbons. Different techniques, including shale compaction, lignite compaction, and low temperature thermochronology are ap-plied in the present paper with the objective of assessing the timing and magnitude of Neogene uplift and erosion.

Underpressures (subhydrostatic heads) in the Paleozoic units underlying the Great Plains of North America are a consequence of Cenozoic uplift of the area. Based on tectonostratigraphic data, we have developed a cumulative uplift history with superimposed periods of deposition and erosion for the Great Plains for the period from 40 Ma to the present.

erosion is suggested by apatite fission-track ages of 105–60 Ma from the Odenwald and Schwarzwald basement ( Wagner and Storzer, 1975 ; Wagner et al., 1989 ; Timar-Geng et al., 2006 ).

In addition to glacial erosion, … with the timing of uplift. Firstly, we describe some of the terminology used in the context of uplift/denudation, and then consider some of the causes of uplift, focussing on the first order physical controls. We also provide an overview of the methods used to quantify denudation and denudation chronologies on geological timescales. Uplift of the Sierra Nevada, westward tilting, stream incision, Low summit erosion rates suggest that the rock uplift approximates the surface uplift of crestal summits.

In summary, we show that tilting plays a key role in controlling the syn-rift sediment flux and, in a counterintuitive way, modifies the relationship between topographic relief and catchment-averaged erosion rates. Our results provide a new perspective on the origin and timing of sediment starvation relative to structural development in rifts.

We used K = 1 × 10-6 m 0.1 yr −1 in simulations to find the best-fit curve but show analogous results from simulations using the minimum and maximum of K calculated as the 95 % confidence interval on the regression that excluded the two outlier points (Fig. S16) as ranges in the timing of the onset of tilting and estimated uplift rates.
